Steven Moffat announced at a Doctor Who press conference on 21 March that Coleman, who had replaced Karen Gillan as the companion of the Doctor since Arthur Darvill left the series she would play the role alongside Matt Smith. Moffat picked her for the role due to the ease with which she worked with Smith and also because she was faster at speaking than Smith.
